New Paltz Village, NY Mayor Jason West, a 26-year-old elected last year on the Green Party line, said that it was his "moral obligation" to perform same-sex marriages and planned to perform at least four such marriages on Friday at a private bed-and-breakfast in his hometown.

Governor George Pataki's Health Department issued a statement that warned: "A municipal clerk who issues a marriage license outside these guidelines [prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying], and any person who solemnizes such a marriage, would be violating state law and subject to the penalties under the law."

The battle over gay marriage that began last week in San Francisco is coming to Ulster County.
