Can a Christian Have an Abortion? Below is an email from one friend to another discussing a difficult question about Christians who have abortions. Flip's response to these ladies brought another gentleman into the arena. You will find the entire discussion below. (C wrote to me wondering how people who say they know God and are believers could be doing such heinous things like killing their babies. This is my answer to her.) P C, I truly believe that the women and men we encounter at the abortion clinics (working inside and coming for abortions) are NOT true Christians but pseudo-Christians or tares. Jesus made reference to this kind of person, a person who THINKS they belong to Him and really don't. (Foolish virgins, tares, sons of the devil, full of dead men's bones, wolves in sheep's clothing, workers of iniquity) He made it pretty clear that there are MANY of them. (Luke 13:24-28) "Not all that sound religious are really godly people. They may refer to me as "Lord," but still won't get to heaven. For the decisive question is whether they obey my Father in heaven." Matthew 7:21 Fear of the Lord, conviction of sin and obedience to the call to holiness are signs of true believers. Pseudo-Christians don't have much of a struggle over killing pre-born babies. They aren't afraid of God. They toss their conviction aside and it barely whimpers. Pseudo-Christians are not just at the abortion clinics, they sit beside us in church. Scores of the churches in Orlando are full of pseudo-Christians, many are being PASTORED by pseudo- Christians (the blind leading the blind). These are pseudo-churches. Killing pre-born infants is a sin of COMMISSION, but the sin of OMISSION counts against those who profess Christ as their Lord as well. It is given to Christians and the Church to " . . . overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21) Believers in Jesus are to be out in the real world, defending the beauty of life. Keep praying . . . our ministry is having a powerful impact revealing the stark contrast between light and dark, Genuine Christianity and pseudo-Christianity. Blessings, This is Flip's response: Many who say they are Christian, and many who sincerely believe they are Christian, may be sincerely wrong. Just like the folks on the Titanic were sincere in their belief that the ship would not, or better yet, could not sink. They were very sincere, but they were sincerely wrong. There were many in Jesus' day who believed on Him and the miracles He did, but He did not entrust Himself to them (Jn 2:240). Nicodemus was such a guy (Jn 3:1-21). It wasn't until Jn 19:39 that we see Nicodemus come out of the closet and become a man that Jesus would entrust Himself to. That being said, there are many who go to have abortions that actually are Christians. They are not all pseudo Christians though the very action they take is sin (murder). We must come to an understanding of this fact. Can Christians still sin? Of course they can and do. Can Christians sin presumptuously and say, "God will forgive me for having this abortion." Yes, they certainly can and they certainly do. Their walk with the Lord will be forever changed. The sin of presumption is a very grave sin. Whether you are Calvinist or Arminian it is very grave. When I was in seminary, I debated the abortion "issue" and I came to the conclusion, so did most who were in seminary with me, that abortion was OK in some instances. I was wrong. I was sincerely wrong. Was I still a Christian? Yes. This was not a sin of presumption. It was a sin of ignorance. When did I learned the truth? It was when somebody confronted me with the real Law of God. I repented of my sin and He forgave me through the blood of Christ. I was not in presumptuous sin which is likened unto the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. We are told so often to not judge. We must be a people willing to make judgments, but when we judge, we must make a right judgment. We need to be careful how we judge. In
Christian love, This is the gentleman's remarks: The only reply I have is that when a person is truly born again (becomes a Christian) the Holy Spirit takes up residence with in him and convicts him of his sin bringing him to true repentance. In the manner that He convicts us brings us to a point of decision of not wanting to disappoint through disobedience. The feeling in our new spiritual heart of disobedience motivates us to turn and not sin. It causes us to seek wise counsel, and an answer to our problems within the realm of his rightness. HE will provide. With that said ...a true Christian would not have an abortion! Do Real (True) Christians sin? Sin yes, Like swearing, tell a lie, spontaneous things requiring little decision making time. But things requiring more time for decision gives the Holy Spirit more time to convict a person of the gravity of the sin and lead them to a right decision on their behalf. An abortion is nothing a person just thinks and says, "Oh I'll go have an abortion right now". Flip again responds: I appreciate your thoughts because they express the quandary of so many. Those of us at the mills watch people bring their Bibles into the waiting room to study the Scripture while their child is scheduled to be ripped apart. We listen to the young "Christian?" women going into the mill telling us how difficult the decision is and that Jesus loves them, understands the duress they are under, and will forgive them. Where do you suppose they got the incorrigible theology that they can sin all the more that grace may abound? (Romans 6:1). Certainly not from the apostle Paul (Romans 6:2). As a matter of fact, many of them will tell us that "their Jesus" loves them so much that He died on the cross for "their sin." They remind us that "their Jesus" would never stand outside an abortion mill condemning them and making them feel bad. He would never be judgmental and bigoted like us. He would understand and forgive. I have no doubt that they sincerely believe this to be true, but they are sincerely wrong! Where did they ever get the idea that Jesus desires sacrifice ( the blood of the lamb, the blood of the lamb, I'm covered by the blood of the lamb) rather than obedience (Your will, not mine, be done). "Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams." 1 Samuel 15:22. Samuel confronted and condemned King Saul for his lack of obedience, not for his multitudinous sacrifices. Don't kill a baby, and then run to Jesus and ask for forgiveness. Run to Jesus first, and He will take what you think is a curse and turn it into a wonderful blessing. You can trust Him. This pathetic theology, that allows women to come to abortion mills with the assurance that the blood of Jesus will cleanse them from every sin, comes straight from the pit of hell. Let me be more specific. It comes straight from pulpits all over this land that have decided to build their theology on the "seeker friendly jesus." Of course this "seeker friendly jesus" is not the Jesus of the Scripture at all. Oh, He is the same historical Jesus - the one born of a virgin in Bethlehem, crucified, and raised from the dead on the third day. But He is a different Jesus, a different spirit, and a different Gospel from the one Paul preached. (2 Corinthians 11:4). It is no Gospel at all! Yes, this vomitous theology comes from pulpits that, "...dress the wound of My people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace." Jeremiah 6:15. Further in Jeremiah the Lord says that these priests, "...strengthen the hands of evil doers, so that no one turns from their wickedness..." Jeremiah 23:14. "But if they had stood in My council, they would have proclaimed My words to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds." Jeremiah 23:22. It was the priests who did not turn the people from evil. They did not stand in the council of God and did not proclaim His Word. Sounds like the Church today. True men of God would be unashamed of God's Word, they would proclaim it, allow it to expose sin, and turn people to Christ and obedience. This is very judgmental. Faithful men of God would be telling their congregations the truth about abortion. Though our nation says it is legal to kill children in the womb, the Church of the Living God must say, by word and action that it is not. How will people know that they are in sin if no one loves them enough to tell them this truth? How will people know that the Supreme Court of the United States of America broke the Law of God on January 22, 1973, if men in the pulpits don't tell them? How will the people of God even know that God's Law has been broken, if the men in the pulpits don't tell them? "...where there is no Law, there is no transgression." Romans 4:15. The men of God have not rightly represented God's heart and mind to His people. We have made Him a rather pleasant fellow, who wants to help us on our journey, but realizes how weak and prone to sin we are. Therefore He sent His Only Son Jesus to die on a cross for our sins so that we could be God's friend. He is not judgmental, and only desires our very best in life. He is always forgiving, if one will just utter the magic words, "Jesus, please forgive me." He is what you have been missing in your life to make you the best you, you can be. It should not surprise us then that as this fiction is preached from the pulpits of our land, many men and women are confused as to whether or not abortion is a sin. The Law of God, which reveals our sin and points us to a Savior, is not being preached by the men of God because it is too judgmental, not "seeker friendly," and it is condemning. So precious Christian women are going to abortion mills, killing their own children believing that abortion is legal. It is legal in America only because the men of God have not rightly represented the Law of God. But, just in case abortion might be wrong in the sight of God, a Christian woman can always fall back into the loving arms of "jesus" (not to be mistaken with the Jesus of Scripture) who will forgive every sin. Yes, loving, non-judgmental, "jesus" is a lie birthed in the pulpits of this land. You have said that a woman who goes in to have an abortion couldn't be a real Christian. I tell you that you are wrong. Real Christians can and do commit real sins. The blood of Christ can forgive them. Yes, a Christian mother can know that abortion is murder, yet still kill her child. King David was a man after God's own heart. His theological depth cannot be questioned. Yet he sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah the Hittite, killed. He knew what he was doing was sin. Was he forgiven? Yes, upon his true repentance, but remember that David's heart was becoming so hard that it took Nathan the prophet to break it and say "...You are the man !" I Samuel 12:7. Though forgiven, there were severe consequences for his sin - the child born to Bathsheba died, and the sword never left the house of David. Real and mature Christians can and do sin. If we do sin, however, we have an advocate who speaks with the Father in our defense - Jesus Christ. (John 1:8 - 2:2). Thank God this is so. As for those coming to the mill telling us about how much they love Jesus, yet are hell-bent on killing a child. They presume upon God's love and forgiveness. Can these be Christians? Maybe and maybe not: "Not everyone who says to Me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven." Matthew 7:21. They may sincerly believe that they are Christian but they may be sincerely wrong. They are, sadly, the product of the pitiful "seeker-friendly" church of today. As for the true Christian, one who is born-again, who comes to the abortion mill, knowing that what they are about to do is sin, yet presuming upon the blood of Jesus to get them through their sin - WATCH-OUT! The sin of presumption is as the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. It brings with it a hardening of the heart.
