A Dark Day for the City of Dallas

A Dark Day for the City of Dallas

On Wednesday, May 8, 2002, the City Council of Dallas, Texas declared itself to be God! In a 13-2 vote, Agenda Item # 54 was passed. This ordinance "prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the areas of employment, housing, and public accommodations; to provide a complaint, investigation, conciliation, and enforcement process; to provide exceptions; to define terms; and to provide a criminal penalty of not less than $200 or more than $500. In other words, if you do not hire someone who is a homosexual or if you refuse to rent to someone who is a homosexual, you can be sued.

Yes, as far as the Dallas City Council is concerned, homosexuality is a good thing. If anyone were to disagree with this new ordinance, he would be considered a hate-filled bigot, desiring to throw us back into the dark ages with Neanderthal logic.

It was painfully obvious that the council and the homosexual lobby were joined at the hip on this issue long before it was brought to the floor. The room was full of those who are the collective voice for the homosexual community (the seed of the serpent) in Dallas. There were thirty-one people signed up to speak in favor of passing this amendment. What the room lacked were the ones ordained by God (the seed of the woman) to come against the lies of the serpent. There were only two that spoke in opposition, Flip Benham and a man named Ed Drake.

We realized how deep the relationship between the homosexual community and the Dallas City Council was when Don Carty, the President and CEO of American Airlines, stood up to proclaim "how proud American Airlines was to take a stand against discrimination." American Airlines not only placed its stamp of approval on homosexuality, but has begun to take the lead in forcing this lifestyle down the throats of cities across this nation. (note that Blockbuster Video, Kinko's, and IBM were also mentioned as supporters of homosexual rights).

The newly constructed American Airlines Center held a press conference following the council meeting to herald the success of American Airline's "private partnership with the city of Dallas."

Dallas mayor Laura Miller thanked the council members, "with tears in her eyes," that helped craft the ordinance. She also thanked the Gay and Lesbian League for working so closely with the City Council. We heard statements from council members like "it was time to let the sunshine in" and "this is a matter of fairness and justice, not the endorsement of a lifestyle." Councilman Oakley pointed to American Airlines to show that this ordinance would not send businesses into moral decay nor will the City of Dallas come crashing down. Afterwards, John Reyes noted that it was interesting that it was two AA planes that the terrorists used to hit the World Trade Center in September. Councilman Oakley is a member of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) which is the largest homosexual church in the nation.. He extolled the ministry of the Cathedral of Hope in Dallas (an MCC affiliate) and pointed out all the wonderful outreach that they are involved in.

What was most troubling was Councilman Donald Hill. He told the council that he had prayed about the issue of homosexuality and that he was supporting it. His Sunday school teacher was present and he stated that he knew he would have to answer to her. He felt that his thinking had progressed. He had always been taught that the reason that God had destroyed Sodom was that there were no righteous people left in the city. He now knows that the reason for Sodom's demise is found in Ezekiel 16:49. Sodom was destroyed because she was arrogant, over-fed, and unconcerned. He now understands that "Dallas will not be infected and die because we support this ordinance." He closed by saying that he wanted to honor God with his vote of yes.

What Councilman Hill did not understand was that there is nothing more arrogant than denying God's design of marriage between a woman and a man. There is nothing more arrogant than to be so over-fed on our own selfish lust that we are now protecting a behavior that God says will destroy us. There is nothing more arrogant than when Councilman Hill puts Himself in the place of God and says that he is unconcerned with the moral heritage that we are leaving our children. And he did it all in the name of Jesus. Mr. Oakley, an open homosexual, stated that he attended church with Mr. Hill one day and "saw that they all praised God and worshipped Him the same." It is also worth mentioning that both of these men felt they needed to address the issue that the city would not be destroyed. They may be trying to believe that with all their heart, but I believe that God is trying to tell them otherwise.

There was one other major player in this disastrous day for the City of Dallas. His name is Alexander. Alexander is an upper elementary student who was chosen to be "Mayor for the Day." Our heart broke as Alexander was subjected to the sodomite love fest we were witnessing between the City of Dallas and the homosexual community. But we noticed something about Alexander. When Flip very succinctly challenged the council to vote on the side of the Lord, he also spoke directly to Alexander. He encouraged him to stand for Jesus even if he had to stand alone. He reminded Alexander that he was the hope for our future. You could see Alexander's countenance brighten at this challenge. He smiled and looked Flip straight in the eyes.

Please join us this summer as we live out our theology in the streets of Dallas and proclaim that Jesus is Lord! Bring the "arrows" God has placed in your quiver and let them witness for themselves their parents, pastors, and deacons fight the good fight. When it is their time, they will be trained up in the way that they should go and they will never back down. The gates of hell cannot prevail against God's prevailing church.

We are praying for you Alexander and all the other little Alexander's out there.

Stand strong for King Jesus!
