When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right and duty of the people to alter or to remove said government, by laying again its foundation on the principles found in the Word of God. When the foundations are being destroyed what can the righteous do? (Psalm 11:3) Rebuild the foundations. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes. All experience has shown that it is desirable that mankind suffer, while evils are sufferable, rather than to right themselves by transforming the forms of government by which they are bound. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, and utter contempt for God's Word become the fare of the day, it becomes the duty of the people to revise such government, and to provide biblical guards for the future security and happiness of the nation. The history of the federal government of the United States of America over the past fifty years is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations of God's Word. In its unbridled desire to sustain itself, it has rejected the authority of Almighty God and become a tyrant rather than a servant. It has, in many and various ways, declared itself to be God. While laying claim to heaven, it denies the very God of heaven. This is nothing less than rebellion and high treason against the God of the Bible, the God of our Pilgrim Forefathers, and the God of our Founding Fathers. All the history of our great nation testifies that the God of our founding documents and the God of our liberty is Jesus Christ. Because of our government's rebellion against Him, we are presently suffering under the manifold judgments of God Himself both from within and from without. Behold the Charges:
Our Government is in rebellion to Almighty God! It defies and defiles His Commandments. It defiles His people and it defiles the nation called to be a shining city set on a hill.
In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A government, whose character is thus marked, by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to rule a free people. We have warned our federal government repeatedly of attempts to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have appealed to its justice and magnanimity, and we have beseeched it by the ties of our common Lord, Jesus Christ, to disavow these usurpations. We must, therefore hold our government, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies when they set themselves up against the knowledge of God, and friends when they submit to His Commandments. We, therefore, the ambassadors of our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, in humble submission to His inerrant Word, appeal to the Supreme Judge of the universe, for the rectitude of our intentions. In the name, and by the authority of, Jesus Christ, we do solemnly publish and declare, that we, our families, and our children are, and of right ought to be, free from tyranny to serve Almighty God. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
