Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman in Florida whose case sparked an epic legal battle, passed away 13 days after her feeding tube was removed. Josh Heldreth, a 10-year-old Kannapolis boy, is one of the youngest members of the organization. He said it is unfortunate that authorities allowed Schiavo to die.
“I feel very sad for her,” said Josh, who was arrested last week when he tried to take water to Schiavo at her hospice facility in Pinellas Park, Fla. Schiavo, 41, suffered severe brain damage in 1990 after her heart stopped because of a chemical imbalance that was believed to have been brought on by an eating disorder. Court-appointed doctors ruled she was in a persistent vegetative state, with no real consciousness or chance of recovery. The feeding tube was removed with a judge's approval March 18 after Michael Schiavo argued that his wife told him long ago she would not want to be kept alive artificially. His in-laws disputed that, and argued that she could get better with treatment. The legal battle went all the way to Congress and the federal courts. Court-appointed doctors ruled that Terri Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state, with no real consciousness or chance of recovery. “Terri Schiavo was a gift of God, and as a nation, we decided to let that gift die,” he said. “We should have been more than blessed to have taken care of her, to give her food and water.” The leader of Operation Save America, Flip Benham, said this case sets a dangerous precedent. “We have opened the door for euthanasia and legalized euthanasia and lethal injection,” he said. “This is the Roe v. Wade of euthanasia.” Twenty-two members of Benham’s organization were arrested in Florida for trying to interfere in the case. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
