Fight hate!

Here is an excellent letter to the editor of the Charlotte Observer written by Tim Hanline in response to Fight Signs, Slogans of Hate by Rebecca Ruhlen. ~Flip

Fight hate!
by Tim Hanline

As I glanced over Rebecca Ruhlen's opinion rousing a community to rise up and fight hate at North Mecklenburg High School, I almost stood right up and cheered! Here is an intelligent parent, an anthropologist no less, who saw the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and decided to hold up a sign herself! Rebecca's choice to get involved is to be applauded!

Perhaps she saw the pictures of baby boys and girls that had been ripped apart by the horrors of the abortion procedure, and she must have said to herself, "certainly, nothing could be more hateful than ripping a child limb from limb in her mother's womb!"

Perhaps, as an educated anthropologist, Rebecca knows of the dangers and risks of homosexuality. She, no doubt, understands that most new AIDS infections are the result of homosexual acts. Rebecca is likely also aware that a six-year study of sexual abuse committed by foster parents found a highly disproportionate percentage, 34%, of the cases were homosexual in nature while only 3% of the population say they engage in homosexual acts. Understanding that there is not a shred of evidence that anybody is born homosexual, she must have said to herself, "certainly anybody that would want to thrust homosexuality onto our children must be hateful!"

Perhaps, as educated as she is in the social sciences, Rebecca is also aware that Islam advocates beating women who are disobedient (Koran 4:34). She must have said to herself, "any religion that advocates beating women certainly is hateful!"

Just when she thought that it could not get worse, Rebecca probably took a critical look at the depressed moral condition of this high school and noticed that 48% of her child's classmates are sexually active, and a quarter of those have sexually transmitted diseases.

After processing all of this information, perhaps Rebecca realized that if the Gospel message of Jesus Christ penetrates the hearts and minds of the students of North Mecklenburg High School, there could be a great outbreak of righteousness. Teen pregnancy, STD's, drug and alcohol abuse, foul language and hateful acts of violence could be completely abated.

Rebecca's decision to discontinue as a by-stander and get involved is to be applauded!

Sadly though, Rebecca was not fighting hate; Rebecca was preserving hate.
