Dear
Ms Caroll,
I believe we are both residents of Milford, and would like to have
it be the ideal city to live and work in. Unlike our Mayor who was
born, raised and has lived here all his life I chose to make this
the place for me to retire too and live out my remaining days.
I like you, (this is a presumption on my part) have never set foot
in one of these shops, so I can only guess what they contain. –
books, videos and devices of all sorts relating to sexual activities.
None of them offer what I call “services” such as might
happen in a massage parlor.
Then we have the new Penthouse shop that carries a line of products
that may be found in Victoria’s Secret or in Fredericks of
Hollywood.. what distinguishes Penthouse from the others is that
they also have the XXX rated books and videos.
The reason I’m writing to you is that you call these business
sleasy and want them out of our community. Yet they are legal businesses
paying taxes to our city and they restrict who may enter to adults
only.
Once again I make note of your email address where you use the word
“pro-life.” To me it says that this is a very high priority
in your thinking. That being pro-life in regard to pregnant women
is akin to saying that women are not allowed to have fun during
sex or to wear clothing that excites them.
You and I just don’t think alike. I was all in favor of the
ERA movement decades ago. I believe women are as equals to men,
that they have every right to make decisions for themselves especially
when it concerns their own bodies. Until the baby is born men are
only sperm donors and have no say as to what a woman does, anymore
than if she wants a tatoo. It’s just not his decision to make.
We men may suggest or even urge a woman to do something but she
makes the final decision.
What saddens me is that by being pro-life you believe that birth
control is immoral and that once becoming pregnant a woman has lost
her rights to her own body. That if she becomes a mother she alone
is legally responsible to care for her child for the next 18 years
whether she can afford to or not and if not then she must give up
her baby for adoption. No where have I read in the pro-life literature
that says that if we insist that you give birth to the child we
will financially assist you in raising it.
On the other hand the pro-choice camp says yes you can give birth
to your fetus, but in consultation with your doctor you may terminate
your pregnancy if you chose too without ant interference from your
sperm donor or your church.
This month my wife and I will celebrate our 42 wedding anniversary
with our children and grandchildren, all of whom now live here in
Milford. I think we have taught our children to know right from
wrong and give them a set of morals by example. Yet when it comes
to these sex shops, they were here before me and I think they will
be here after I’m gone. I don’t expect that any of my
family will be patrons of their businesses, nor will we encourage
others. Yet there are those who must satisfy themselves with that
which is available there, just as there are those who must smoke
a cigarette or drink alcohol.
Cigarettes harms your own body and its smoke those who are close
to you. Alcohol can harm your body and can kill others if you drink
and drive. Yet reading a book or watching a video does not harm
their bodies or others and it rarely causes one to commit a crime.
Of all the human vices this is near the bottom of the list to attack.
If you think I’m wrong, I would love to hear from you.
Sincerely
Ron Goldwyn
