‘adult’ law expected to pass in Milford TOWN TALK MILFORD — The state’s strictest adult ordinance, which would ban nudity and restrict partial nudity at clubs, is expected to be passed at Monday’s Board of Aldermen meeting. City Attorney Marilyn Lipton has been drafting and researching the new ordinance for the past six months. There is only one establishment in the city that features exotic dancing, Keepers on Woodmont Road. City officials said the proposed ordinance would apply to the club, even though it opened under the city’s existing regulations. The ordinance would also license club owners and managers and prohibit licensing of any club owners and supervisory personnel who have been convicted of, or pleaded no contest to, certain sex-related felonies, such as child pornography or sexual assault. The city’s current zoning regulations regarding adult establishments were adopted in 1996. Prior to the aldermanic meeting, a group of residents is planning to protest what they perceive to be an abundance of adult businesses in the city. Marilyn Carroll, who is organizing the protest, said it will begin 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. The aldermanic meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. "It’s a large concern," Carroll said of the adult businesses. "It affects the safety of our kids and the morality in the community. It draws the kind of people we don’t want in our neighborhood. It draws child predators and sexual deviants." Aldermanic Minority Leader Gayle Slossberg, D-1, who requested in January that the city’s current adult ordinance be reviewed, said the administration has failed to protect the city from adult shops. Slossberg said the fact that Penthouse Boutique, an adult "superstore" on Banner Drive, was able to open last week can be directly attributed to Mayor James Richetelli Jr. not knowing what sections of the city were vulnerable to the development of adult business. "How is it in Milford that these types of businesses keep coming in," Slossberg said. "The administration needs to be proactive and see the potential issues before they happen, which is what we tried to do with this ordinance." "For Mrs. Slossberg to point a finger on this one is typical," Richetelli countered. "The people of Milford know where I stand on this issue." Richetelli said his administration has done everything in its legal power to restrict adult businesses. "The Supreme Court has said we can not ban these businesses and the state of Connecticut protects them even further with its grandfather laws," Richetelli said.
