Bible College Students Take to the Streets
Last Friday (Nov. 5), Flip Benham spoke in a chapel service at my college (God's Bible School & College, www.gbs.edu) in Cincinnati, OH. Using the book of Jeremiah, he delivered a very keen challenge for Christian activism.
Some of the students admitted that Flip's message was indeed “Hard-hitting.” One student commented on the speaker's candidness in advising preachers to tell the whole truth. Another student, a ministerial major, said, “[The speaker's message] inspired me more than it offended me.” One girl said, “The message impressed me to put action to my words, to actually do something about the problems that are plaguing our society, and not just wait until it's time to vote.” Later that afternoon, some of us students had an opportunity to do just that. Under Flip's leadership, we took the Gospel to the streets of Cincinnati.
We had three signs and about four hundred pieces of literature, but the impact made was unprecedented. Just as the students of Hughes Center public high school were let out for the weekend, they were challenged with the truth of abortion that they had been denied for too long. Many of those who saw the large pictures of baby Malachi had no idea that abortion was that gruesome. How else would they have known? As Flip said, “The media won't tell them, their schools won't tell them, the church won't tell them.” This was their opportunity to see, hear, and read about the truth of abortion. I was glad to have a part in it. The students of Hughes Center were also confronted that day with a much greater truth: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some students walked up to us wanting to tell us their opinions on abortion, which generated a lot of discussion. But I was amazed at how easily these dialogues could be turned around to the topics of eternity, sin, and salvation through Jesus Christ. I saw more witnessing opportunities in that single hour than I had seen in the whole month previous! My brother Andrew, also a student at God's Bible School & College, was privileged to lead a young man to faith in Christ.
Perhaps Friday's activities had just as much impact on the few from God's Bible School as on those to whom they went to minister. Personally, I received just the inspiration I needed to be bold in my witness. I needed to take my theology to the streets. I needed to see how the Gospel of Jesus Christ aggressively confronts wickedness in society. The group from my school experienced all this in one simple act that occupied little time. In the end, we were all encouraged to continue this ministry by going out on a regular basis. We are making plans for the next school we will visit!
