Rev. Flip Benham with Ante & Kathy Pavkovic and Christan Sugar 9/19/2007
Ante and Kathy Pavkovic, and their daughter Christan Sugar, appeared in Washington D.C.’s Superior Court on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. They were in court to answer for their actions at the chambers of the United States Senate on July 12, 2007. The three rose up in the Senate gallery and prayed in the name of Jesus, quoting Scripture, to open the Senate session that day.
For two hundred and thirty-two years this time honored tradition of opening in prayer to Almighty God has served our country well: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…” Psalm 33:12. Unfortunately, on July 12, 2007, Harry Reid, senator from Nevada, chose to trash this tradition and invited Hindu clergyman Rajan Zed to open the morning session that day with a prayer to his false god (gods).
Not one United States senator stood in opposition to this outrage, though every senator was aware that Zed would be opening the session in prayer. Not one would dare challenge the “politically correct” dogma of religious tolerance. Our Founding Fathers would have physically removed Zed from the rostrum and censured Harry Reid. How the mighty have fallen!
While the United States senators, by their cowardice and absence, bowed and kissed the face of “political correctness,” three gentle Christians rose to their feet to bring honor to Jesus and to the rich heritage of our Founding Fathers. The three were immediately arrested, put in jail, and later released to appear in court and face the music for their dastardly deed – honoring God!
Judge Roy Moore, former Chief Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court, and his Foundation for Moral Law rose to come alongside these gentle Christians and give them a defense. Jesus had moved in the judge’s heart to stand with those who stood for Jesus in the United States Senate. Ben Dupre, a graduate of Regent University and a lawyer par excellence, stood in for Judge Moore as he represented these three valiant souls.
They expected to have a new trial date set, but instead they received a gift from God that was totally unexpected. The prosecutors for the Superior Court of Washington, D.C. did not really want this case to go to trial. They offered the three this: all charges would be dismissed (completely) if they would agree not to come on to the Capitol grounds for one year. No fines. No jail. No record. No anything!
We were all astonished at this offer. We knew there was no way to win in court because the court would never allow us to bring in the testimony of our Founding Fathers, the Bible they revered, the original intent of the Constitution, or anything else for that matter. It would be just, “Did you or did you not rise up in the Senate Chamber on July 12, 2007, and invoke the Name of Jesus? Yes or no!”
Their answer, of course, would have been, “YES!” And they would have been found guilty, then sentenced and fined. Our God had a better way! “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…to him be the glory...” Ephesians 3:20-21.
Well done Kathy, Ante, and Christan, thou good and faithful servants. Well done Judge Moore and Ben Dupre and the Foundation for Moral Law. Well done thou faithful servants who prayed that God’s Name would be glorified in all of this. Well done in Jesus’ Name.
