Here is Matthew Henry’s commentary on Hebrews 11, God’s Hall of Faith.

“He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, whose foundling he was, and her fondling too; she had adopted him for his son, and he refused it. Observe, [1.] How great a temptation Moses was under. Pharaoh's daughter is said to have been his only child, and was herself childless; and having found Moses, and saved him as she did, she resolved to take him and bring him up as her son; and so he stood fair to be in time king of Egypt, and he might thereby have been serviceable to Israel. He owed his life to this princess; and to refuse such kindness from her would look not only like ingratitude to her, but a neglect of Providence , that seemed to intend his advancement and his brethren's advantage….”

Hebrews 11:24-25 could be used as an example of how a Christian leader should handle the pressure to endorse a presidential candidate when tempted to cave to political pragmatism and embrace a candidate whose beliefs, actions and track record prove him to be an enemy of the cross of Christ. Moses was at a crossroads. Should he stay in Pharaoh’s camp and wink at the obvious idolatry, abominable practices and the slavery of his own people or should he take a stand on his immovable inheritance with the people of God? Should he walk in faith believing that God would keep His covenant promises to Abraham and his offspring to prosper and advance His purposes through Israel or should he stay politically connected to Pharaoh’s agenda with the hope of gaining influence down the road?

Such is the day and age we find ourselves as believers in 2007 in these United States . How tragic it is to see a so-called evangelical leader such as Pat Robertson coddle presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani who advocates and endorses child murder and sodomy. Where are the Finneys, Wesleys, Witherspoons and heroes of the American Christian Church?

Where are the Christians who would hold would be political leaders accountable to the unchanging Word of God?

Maybe they are those listed near the end of this powerful chapter. Those who were ostracized, persecuted and mocked who went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— those who the writer of Hebrews declares, “the world was not worthy of them.” We remain.
