Today, we are going to look at the second prayer of Moses in Exodus 32, which is most astounding. This prayer will not only reveal the incredible strain Moses was enduring leading God’s people to the Promise Land, but his willingness to sacrifice what is most precious to any sane man, the salvation of his own soul.

This prayer, along with the Apostle Paul’s decree in Romans 9:1-5, is probably the most remarkable and convicting narratives in all the Bible.

Moses prayed, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written” (Exodus 32:31, 32).

As Israel was receiving the TEN WORDS, the basis of the contract of God’s covenant written by His very finger, they became FEARFUL of Moses’s delay. This ungodly fear led them to violate the very commandments God was preparing to give them. As stated yesterday, the sin was so grievous in the sight of God, He was ready to consume them.

Moses stood in the gap. This second time, he pleaded with God to forgive them to the point of asking God to “blot me out of your book,” if you refuse. It is one thing to consider sacrificing your physical life to save someone else. You are in an entirely different zip code spiritually, however, when you are willing to lay down your eternal life that others might live.

Jesus taught the “no greater love” ethic was to lay down your life for others (John 15:13). The Apostle Paul picking up on this Biblical theme declared, “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7, 8).

Though some penalties were meted out by God to chastise Israel for their abject idolatry, God did not entirely consume them. Moses heartfelt intercession spared Israel of what they so richly deserved.

America has followed this same wicked course. We have played the harlot. Our sins have reached heaven and tower over our heads. Most Americans don’t even know how to blush anymore when it comes to the great evil we have committed in the sight of a Holy God. Most glory in our shame, while God is lifting the skirts of our nation to expose our folly, idolatry, and corruption for all the world to see.

What is God looking for in these days? Ezekiel points the way, “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God” (Ezekiel 22:30, 31).

God issued this decree while the church herself violated the commandments of God. The lesser magistrates, the princes, refused to do their duty to check the evil. Instead, they became like devouring wolves. The prophets, prophesied lies and false visions, while “The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger” (Ezekiel 22:26-29).

Folks, our nation is in deep trouble with the Almighty and we need to intercede like our future and hope depends upon it. Because it most certainly does in Jesus’ name!
