An Admonition to Young Men on Humility and The Need For the Wisdom of the Aged

http://mercyseat.net/…/an-admonition-to-young-men-on-humil…/

By Jason Storms, Assistant Director of Operation Save America

When giving guidelines for eldership the Apostle Paul admonishes the church not to elevate a “novice,” someone young and inexperienced. Those untested and underdeveloped in maturity and wisdom will, according to the Apostle, easily become “lifted up in pride” and “fall into the same condemnation as the devil.”

Young men desperately need the wisdom, temperance and guidance of older, more experienced men. This requires an unusual sort of humility from young men in our culture.

Unusual in our day, though not historically. In most cultures and civilizations profound respect for older people was built into the DNA of society. From Native American tribes to ancient Chinese cultures, when an older man spoke the young men closed their mouths and listened with reverence. In ancient Israel, a recalcitrant youth could be stoned to death for dishonoring their parents.

Throughout most of human civilization, it was well understood that respect was owed to those older and wiser who have gone before, prepared the way, made the sacrifices and learned the difficult lessons that the younger have only begun to even think about.

My wife and I served in a Middle Eastern congregation for two years in Los Angeles while in our mid-twenties. Despite the Americanizing (and even worse, California-izing) of their youth, there still remained a substantial amount of respect demanded of them. Even the wildest and most Americanized young men I knew would never consider mocking an older person publicly. Yet, this happens regularly in our society, and especially on social media, where pompous youth, sheltered from face to face interaction, can say the most disrespectful and smug things and never think twice about their behavior. Christian young men are no exception. “Being right” they feel gives them license to disrespect and hubris. American culture breeds such arrogance.

We are one of the only civilizations in recorded history where young people pervasively mock, mistreat, disrespect and disregard older people with impunity. Youthful arrogance and the presumption of independence and autonomy amongst young people are deeply woven into the ethos of our entire culture.

Thus, we commonly see such things even in our churches and in our pulpits. Youth groups isolate and glorify youth culture as intentionally distinct from the adult world, and of course much cooler. Young men rapidly rise to positions of prominence and authority, climbing the religious corporate ladder. Integrity and tested character are often secondary to charisma, people skills or administrative talents or “working well with young people”. Direct mentorship over many years by seasoned men is often lacking. Paul’s admonition to not exalt a “novice” goes unheeded.

In the world of social media young men can easily prop themselves up as more than they are, jockeying for attention and notoriety. Our culture feeds narcissism and vanity in the most grotesque ways. Men can hide their faults and their flaws behind a computer screen.

Eventually, their immature character will collide with reality, even in social media. The damage that arrogant young men do to the body of Christ can be seen all around us. The wake of strife and contention trails behind them like toilet paper stuck to their shoes.

How easily young men can ridicule and disdain the failures of older men, while they themselves have accomplished a small fraction of what those same older men have accomplished. It’s easy to say, “I would have done it better,” when you haven’t actually done much of anything.

I have known so many young men who began a good work, inspired by some fresh insight and perspective, aggressively advanced by the boundless energy of youth, only to crash and burn, as the immaturities of these “leaders” were never tempered. Their early success spawned the destructive pride Paul warned of and their “ministry” collapsed under the weight of their own weaknesses.

I was raised without a father and was taught to be a smart mouth, to stand up to authority, to “fight for my rights.” When I became a Christian at age 19, God brought a great humbling to my soul. I quickly realized the importance of older men and the systems of authority that surrounded me, corrupt as so many of them had been throughout my life. More importantly, I saw the need for older men, possessed of integrity and virtue, to be guiding lights to my well-intentioned but youthful ignorance.

Anything human beings endeavor to do will be flawed. Pointing out those flaws makes you neither perfect nor a prophet. But it can make you a downright fool, depending on how you go about it. Paul warned, “Do not entertain an accusation against an elder, except on the testimony of two or three witnesses.”

Life is hard. Men who have successfully managed to raise children, preserve their marriages and stay relatively faithful in the vocation God has called them to are deserving of much respect and appreciation, regardless of whatever flaws and failures may have come through their years of battle. One thing that is guaranteed, these men have accumulated wisdom. Life has a way of teaching us, of humbling us over time, breaking us of our fantasies of our own perfection or superiority over those who have come before us.

There is always the danger of older men losing their fight, adopting pragmatism and compromising their principles in ungodly ways, or of becoming too arrogant to take correction or alter the “way they have always done things.” This danger is why young insight, energy and zeal are always needed. And yes, at times even correction. Here Paul gives wise words, “Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father,”

Older mature men are supposed to lead. Not inexperienced novices. No matter how gifted and talented those novices may be. Such ambitious young men should cling to older men, serve under their covering, seek them for guidance, for wisdom and for strength to endure faithfully in this battle.

The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a marathon. If we are to see revival in our day, it will only come in proportion to the degree to which young men are adequately discipled into a mature walk with Christ, where servanthood, humility and virtue are paramount. This means older men need to learn how to mentor and invest in young men, as wise fathers, and good shepherds. But this also means younger men need to humbly seek out such mentorship, recognizing their deficiencies and their need for such wisdom they as of yet do not possess.

“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” – 1 Peter 5:5

I know there are memes of “Jeremiah Strong” and he always seems to have that big ole smile on his face. At the hospital, at times, that is not always the case. There are times when the full weight of what this disease has done to his life, his body, and future is overwhelming.

He tries to hold back the tears to be strong for everybody. What is a father to do? Just hold him and say, “Cry it out son! Let it all out!”

I’ve taught my children God does not want us to be led by our emotions, but by his Word and His Holy Spirit. Most people make unwise decisions that bring ruin, when emotions run wild. Yet, emotions are there for a reason. It is unhealthy to stuff them down, when God has given them to us as stress and pressure release valves.

I send this post so that you understand Jeremiah and our family do not possess a super power, but we do possess saving faith and a true love for Almighty God!

As we pass through this veil of tears, we have this blessed assurance, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

We pray that all that Jeremiah and our family is going through we lead you to this promise and truth and may that truth set you free in Jesus’ name!

Inevitably, when someone goes through a severe trial or disaster happens, the philosophical question arises, ‘Why does bad things happen to good people?”

I’ve learned in life if you ask the wrong question, you will never receive a correct answer. First, the premise of this question is riddled with a Biblical impossibility. One has to assume that there are good people upon the earth that do not deserve to go through a tough time or should escape every disaster known to man.

God’s Word reveals the human condition apart from God’s salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. We are conceived in sin. From the womb we go astray. Every man does what is right in their own eyes. We are bound by sin, walk in darkness, under the sway of the Evil One, and are hell bound.

Besides this spiritual diagnostic test from Scripture, God’s Word plainly states, “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not on”(Romans 3:11, 12).

Most unbelievers reject this Biblical perspective. They believe man is good, it is just his environment that is messed up. This is why leftist gravitate towards seats of power. They mistakenly believe they can perfect men and establish their secular utopia through their ‘laws” public policies, and bureaucratic red tape. True Christians reject that premise. Man can never be saved by keeping the law. Man is saved by grace through faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It is this same Jesus that pinpoints the source of man’s woe, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man” (Matthew 15:19). According to Jesus, the problem is within man, not outside of man.

How did Jesus deal with the concept of why bad things happen to good people? In Luke 13, God’s Word reveals His response. “There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:1-5)

Notice, Jesus rejects the premise. He gives it no credence. He, in essence, is telling these people, “You are asking the wrong question.” It is not why did the tower fall upon these people in this tragic accident or why Pilate murdered people and mingled their blood with his pagan sacrifices.

The true question is why do good things happen to bad people? Why did not that tower fall upon you? Why were you not captured, murdered, and your blood mingled with pagan sacrifices?

Jesus made it clear that those who suffered these things were not worse sinners than us. This is why He calls all of us to repent, lest we all likewise perish.

Please consider well these truths as you wonder why this is happening to our family and Jeremiah. We truly love the Lord and have given our lives to serve and obey Him. No, we have not done so perfectly, but have pursued this course nonetheless.

So, the question is not why this bad thing is happening to Jeremiah or our family. The real question is why this is not happening to the rest of us. Once you realize this, run to the mercy seat of God, repent of your sin, and receive the tender mercies of our Lord and His loving-kindness in Jesus’ name!

The Make A Wish Foundation exists to bless children who face life threatening diseases. They have contacted Jeremiah to let him know that he can go on a special trip, meet someone famous, or set up a legacy foundation to help others.

What does our 16 year old sold out to the Lord, All Star, State Champion Football player desire? How about setting up a meeting with Gov. Office of the Governor Greg Abbott of Texas to demand Texas abolish abortion in the Lone Star state?

Just when I think this kid has done enough suffering to serve the Lord and to touch others, he comes up with this. Gotta love him!!!

While the battle rages from within concerning the life of our son, there is another battle raging from without. There are 10 gentle Christians who interposed at a death camp in Louisville, KY last year to rescue their preborn neighbor. We are now facing the full weight of the federal government.

The Feds have been pursuing depositions to get ready for a possible trial in July. As they have interrogated our brothers and sisters, it is now clear they do not want this to go to trial.

Our government is scrambling to negotiate a deal to avoid a trial. I think it is beginning to dawn on them, we are not the ones on trial, but this corrupt wicked system that has unleashed a covenant of death savaging our nation.

At the appointed time, I’m going to release my written deposition that lays out the Biblical, historical, and governmental justification for the doctrines of Interposition and the Lesser Magistrate to end the American holocaust.

To all my new found friends who have followed our faith journey concerning our son, Jeremiah, one of the ways to support him is to join the battle for the souls of men, the lives of babies, and the future of our blood stained, perverted nation.

“The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

God’s directing our steps.

It’s not where we planned.

38 days ago Jeremiah was told his sports injury was really a malignant tumor in his chest. A surgery, two countries, three hospitals, and countless doctors later, it feels like forever.

When we brought Jeremiah to Tijuana for alternative care, our heart was to increase Jeremiah’s chance of survival.

Osteoblastic Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer. It is resistant to radiation and has already spread (metastasized). Jeremiah has spots on his lung, a large tumor in his chest, and another in his back.

Jeremiah has a 10% chance of survival.

He received excellent care at McLane’s Children’s Hospital, where he had emergency spinal surgery to prevent permanent paralysis and loss of bathroom control. Unfortunately the neurosurgeon was unable to remove the entire tumor.

Traditional methods couldn’t cure him but it could possibly extend his life. With such bad odds, we began to look beyond traditional methods. Angeles Hospital Functional Oncology Center in Tijuana seemed to provide the best combination of hospital care and alternative treatments.

The alternative methods were working. Jeremiah was improving. His physical therapy was helping too. Rusty was encouraged.

And then the cancer struck back.

The tumor in Jeremiah’s chest caused his left lung to fill with blood. The surgeons from Angeles Hospital felt that to attempt to remove it would risk Jeremiah’s life.

We needed a hospital with the expertise and willingness to remove the tumor.

This brings us to where we are now. With sirens wailing, Jeremiah was transported in an ambulance to the border. He was met on the San Diego side by an ambulance from Rady Children’s Hospital. He is in PICU. They are administering oxygen while his lung is slowly drained of blood. They are unsure of the cause of the blood, though they suspect it is in some way related to the tumor.

We appreciate the hospital’s willingness to assist Jeremiah and stabilize him. We are also grateful for the diligent staff in the PICU who, even now, is attending to him.

Sadly, Rady Children’s Hospital for a number of reasons will not treat Jeremiah. The situation is that dire. Their suggested course of action is chemo therapy to shrink the tumor and then surgery. A smaller tumor would lessen the risks of surgery and give Jeremiah a better chance at life.

We are currently working on a medevac flight back to Texas for Jeremiah and Rusty.

Chemo and surgery have risks for Jeremiah. But doing nothing means the battle is over and the race has been run for Jeremiah. Based upon this new development, Rusty had a heart to heart talk with his son.

He stated, “Son, we have been told three times that humanly speaking holistic and other means have gone as far as they can. We have one option left with two choices. We are going home. We are either going home so you can go home to be with the Lord or we are going home to continue to fight.” When asked by Rusty what he wanted to do, Jeremiah replied, “I want to fight.” Rusty’s response, Then fight we shall!”

Matthew Henry once said, “We need to fight until we win or we need to fight until we die.” Whether he lives to serve God or dies to meet God, Jeremiah’s hope and healing is secure. Either way, Jeremiah wins and Christ is glorified.

The journey of faith continues. We do not know what the future holds for Jeremiah, but we fully love and trust the Holy One who holds all our futures in His mighty and capable hands. The Lord richly bless all of you in Jesus’ name!

I called Kendra to get on a plane to come to Tijuana immediately. it is not water, but blood from the tumor that is filling Jeremiah’s lung. They are contemplating a major surgery tomorrow to remove the tumor, drain the blood, and clean the lung. They are calling it a heroic effort.

It is serous enough that they thought it was important for Kendra to be here. My heart is broken into a million pieces and we are looking to the ONE who came to mend broken hearts.

Please pray for our home and the rest of the family. It is difficult to take care of everybody from here.

This is the live feed from my personal page relating our battle against cancer with Jeremiah and our battle to end the American holocaust. It is mind boggling and quite fascinating to discover the similarities. Suffice it to say, the battle from within and the battle from without has taken on a whole new dimension. If you find any merit, please pass it on in your sphere of influence.

The Thomas nation is not concerned with Jeremiah dying. Our Lord has conquered death, hell and the grave. This is why the Scriptures can boast, “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory” (1 Corinthians 15:55).

Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life and Jeremiah’s soul knows that truth quite well and it has set him free. He is in a win/win situation. The Apostle Paul reveals the truth, “To live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). He went on to reveal that to depart and be with Christ is better, it remains a far superior option (Philippians 1:23).

But as family devoted to loving, obeying and serving God, who have feet of clay and see in a mirror dimly, our prayerful desire is for us to have Jeremiah stay with us. We long to see him grow up, become a man of God, and do great exploits to advance the Kingdom of God in the earth.

Amazingly at 16, God has already powerfully used him to touch and change the life of many. In the midst of this current distress, we are keeping our eye on the prize. We want to thank all of you who have decided to come on this journey of faith with us. Knowing, that all things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. The Lord richly bless you!
