Flip Benham Baptizing Norma (Jane Roe) McCorvey

By now, most of you may have heard the controversy surrounding Norma McCorvey. The pro-abort/homosexual community has “evidence” that close to death, Norma recanted her conversion. According to them, Norma played both sides that exploited her and used them for personal gain. In other words, her testimony is a fake

I just got off the phone with brother Flip Benham who will be issuing a press release and a video to separate fact from fiction. I’ve had CNN and LA Times contact me a few times with questions. The following is my response. Pray the Lord be glorified and the truth revealed in Jesus’ name!
When Norma was converted and baptized, our ministry Operation Rescue/Operation Save America took very serious our duty before God to care for her bruised and battered soul. It is true that both sides to a certain degree exploited Norma for their own purposes. We took a different approach.
We cared more about her as a person than what she could do for the cause. We sat her down to root and ground her in the faith, so she would be prepared to face the controversy surrounding her powerful testimony.
The Scriptures warn to not lift up a novice before the time, lest they be filled with pride and fall under the commendation of the Devil. We were teaching her the way of Christ, which is, it is better to serve, than to be served. Like most humans, however, we like it the other way around and Norma was no exception.
Eventually the “Pro-life” movement began to offer her speaking engagements that would not only give her public recognition in the pro-live movement, but speaking fees as well. How much, again, I do not know. Anyway, you had us admonishing Norma to rest for now to get strengthened in the faith to be equipped to handle the battle ahead before launching into public ministry and others saying the door is wide open to have all these things right now. Norma went with the latter option and the rest they say is history.
I truly believe Norma had a genuine conversion, but other things entered in to seek to discredit her testimony and I’m sure the powers that be will take advantage of it to further their pro-abort/homosexual narrative that paints Christians as hypocrites, charlatans, and liars. Through it all, a few things I truly know, Jesus is still Lord, abortion is still a sin and crime that needs to be penalized by law, and the world will try to use this controversy to justify the evil of abortion.
IN KING JESUS’ SERVICE,
Rusty Thomas, National Director, Operation Save America

When it comes to the passionate topic of patriotism, there are many opinions being voiced, especially, when now our nation’s future stands in grave peril.

We know Biblically, the Psalmist advocated strenuously for patriotism on the behalf of Jerusalem and Israel. He stated in the midst of Babylonian captivity, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill! If I do not remember you, let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—If I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy” (Psalms 137:5, 6).

Does that mean we should love our nation regardless if it does good or bad? I don’t think that can be the measure of true patriotism. Why is this an important distinction to keep in mind?

Well, I believe it is safe to assume our nation is at the crossroads. What may the future hold when it comes to the plight of America?

Here are some passages to consider as we wrestle with this important question.

“The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it” (Jeremiah 18:7-10).

“For the nation and kingdom which will not serve You shall perish, And those nations shall be utterly ruined” (Isaiah 60:12).

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalms 19:7).

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance” (Psalms 33:12).

Perhaps, this was the reasoning behind the Father of our Country, George Washington, giving this admonishment to the citizens of our nation. He stated, “To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.”

He also gave this warning at his Farewell Speech, Sept. 19, 1796:

“The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of right and order which Heaven itself has ordained. … Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.”

According to Washington’s standard, how many true American patriots do we still have left in our beleaguered nation?

The title “The Tale of Two Governments” is borrowed from the title from Mr. Dickens, The Tale of Two Cities. What is the best case scenario for civil government as opposed to the worst case scenario? What constitutes a wise government as opposed to a foolish one? What does a government based upon the Bible look like as opposed to a government rooted in humanism, which the Bible refers to as the beast? What is more preferable for our future hope, a government exercising its authority in the light of justice or a government that descends into the darkness of tyranny, a government that inspires a spring of hope or plots a winter of despair?

As our nation moves from being a free nation towards Socialism and Communism, I believe we are at the crossroads to answer these questions before they are answered for us.

God, in His Word informs us that this “tale of two governments” does exist in our poor fallen world. Proverbs 29:2 teaches, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” As you check the pulse of America today, are Americans groaning or are they rejoicing?

Thankfully, it is also in the Scriptures that we find the delineation between what constitutes a righteous government as opposed to a tyrannical one.

We will be studying two Scripture references to discover the contrast. They are Romans 13:1-4 and Psalms 94:20, 21. Prayerfully, between these two references, the reader will gain understanding between a virtuous government and an immoral government as God’s Word defines the critical concepts of good and evil. Otherwise, as men and nations are prone to do, we descend to a place where good becomes evil and evil magically becomes good (Isaiah 5:20). The following are the Biblical marks that define them both.

Three Marks of a Tyrannical Government

Psalms 94:20, 21 states, “Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with You? They gather together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.” Generally speaking, Psalms 94 cries out to God to shine forth His Justice upon those who “break in pieces Your people, O LORD, and afflict Your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless” (Psalms 94:5, 6). A powerful question is mentioned as well, one I dare say the modern day church has been negligent to answer, “Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity” (Psalms 94:16)? From there, the Psalmist zeros in on the three major marks of tyrannical government that God rejects and refuses to endorse.

First mark: A tyrannical government “devises mischief by law.” In other words, they codify evil into law. In the name of law, despotic governments violate the function of law. The French philosopher, Frederic Bastiat, stated, “It (civil government) has acted in direct opposition to its proper end; it has destroyed its own object; it has been employed in annihilating the justice which it ought to have established.” Today, in America, under the color of law, our experiment with liberty is being dismantled, one freedom at a time.

Human law divorced from the foundation of God’s moral law, is no law at all. Sir William Blackstone, English Jurist, who penned Commentaries on the Laws of England, clarifies this time-honored truth:

Man, considered as a creature, must necessarily be subject to the laws of his Creator, for he is entirely a dependent being… And, consequently, as man depends absolutely upon his Maker for everything, it is necessary that he should in all points conform to his Maker’s will… this will of his Maker is called the law of nature. These laws laid down by God are the eternal immutable laws of good and evil. This law of nature dictated by God Himself; is of course superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times: no human laws are of any validity if contrary to this… The doctrines thus delivered we call the revealed or divine law, and they are to be found in the Holy Scriptures… {and} are found upon comparison to be really part of the original law of nature. Upon these two foundations, the law of nature and the law of revelation depend all human laws; that is to say, no human laws should be suffered to contradict these.

America rejects this foundation for law today and has opted for legal positivism. Legal positivism implies law does not need to have an ethical basis. In other words, it is not necessary for law to have a moral foundation. Concepts of righteousness, morality, and time honored truths, are no longer necessary to support law.

Frederic Bastiat exposed the folly of lawlessness masquerading as law. He stated, “When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law.” Just a cursory view of American jurisprudence and the culture it has spawned reveals both tragic realities manifesting under our watch.

As a result of America’s betrayal against God’s Law, our nation opted for a campaign calling for judicial reform. Led by Christopher Columbus Langdell, dean of the Harvard Law School, America rejected Blackstone in favor of Langdell’s “reforms.” He gave birth to the current case method, legal model. The case method uses the study of man’s experience, previous court cases, and prior judge’s rulings as the basis for “law.”

Roe vs. Wade is the epitome of Langdell’s judicial reforms and legal positivism. It moved the basis of law from an eternal, fixed standard to the whims of fallen men. The case method, legal model and legal positivism conspired to produce the “Constitution is a living, breathing document” mentality that serves to break the chains on the federal beast that threatens our liberties today. They also paved the way for judicial activism. Judicial activism legislates “law,” like Roe v. Wade, rather than judge cases according to the Constitution. Void of divine absolutes, law has become a flimsy human fabrication.

We cringe today at the legal concept of paterfamilias. Under Roman “law,” the father had the authority to express thumbs up, his child lives or thumbs down, his child dies. Yet, Roe vs. Wade granted this same so-called right to women. Think about the implications of this unlawful, yet “legal” insanity.

The basis of law finds its source in the fickleness of flawed human beings. In this case, if woman wants the conceived child, the baby lives, if the woman rejects her child, the baby is exterminated. With a straight face, America calls this law, a Constitutional right. The God of the Bible describes a government who allows such evil as those who “devise mischief by law.” He will not have anything to do with it, except judge it, like every other idol fit for destruction.

Second mark: They gather together against the life of the righteous. The sword of civil government is not neutral. It is a ministry of justice that is to be concerned with the physical welfare of men and nations. Part of its function is to punish evil doers as God defines evil and to protect those who are good in God’s sight. If our civil government reverses that function and protects evil, it must of necessity punish the righteous. This is part of the reason why the Apostle Paul called for prayers for those who are in authority, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1, 2).

Proverbs 17:15 warns, “He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.” This double abomination dominates American jurisprudence today. Our government gathers against the life of the righteous by legalizing sins and abominations, such as, abortion and homosexuality. Local, state, and federal officials are routinely denying Christians their First Amendment Rights in order to uphold, celebrate, and defend what the Bible deems unlawful. 1 Timothy 1:8-11 teaches:

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

Tragically, our government is making a conscience decision that the pro-abort and sodomite agendas trumps Christians free speech, free exercise of religion, and a host of other rights articulated in the Constitution of the United States of America.

Our Lord takes this persecution against His people personally. Before Saul became Paul, he was breathing out great threats against the fledgling church (Acts 9:1). He hunted Christians down, imprisoned them, confiscated their property, and had many put to death. On his way to Damascus, however, to spread more terror amongst God’s people, he had a divine encounter. Suddenly, a great light shown from heaven and Saul was knocked off his high horse. It was at this point the Lord reveals something truly remarkable. He declared, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads” (Acts 9:3-5).

Saul never laid a hand on the person of Jesus Christ and yet the Lord accused Saul of persecuting Him. In other words, when you touch God’s people, the apple of His eye, you touch Him. As a result of this divine encounter, Saul became Paul, the hunter became the hunted, and the persecutor became the persecuted.

It is never a good practice or sound governmental policy to persecute God’s people and yet the world delights to do so as seen in Islamic and Communist regimes. Sadly, America is steadily moving forward in this dangerous direction. The day may come when Christians will be considered enemies of the state in the land of the free and the home of the brave. In some government documents, Christians have already been labeled as “extremists.”

History reveals that our Lord has a major problem with governments who “gather together against the life of the righteous.” Psalms 2 sends this specific warning to civil rulers, “Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.”

Third mark: Tyrannical governments condemn innocent blood. The first mention of civil government in the Bible is found in Genesis 9:6, which states, “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God, He made man.” It is here that we discover the ultimate purpose for civil government, which is to protect life and stop the shedding of innocent blood. God instituted the civil magistrate to make sure the earth would never again resort back to the horrific conditions of evil before the flood.

Our Founding Fathers agreed with this Biblical understanding of civil government. Thomas Jefferson declared, “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” Therefore, any civil official that upholds Roe vs. Wade and promotes abortion violates their sacred trust and is not morally qualified to govern.

The Biblical Marks of Good Government

Romans 13:1-4 reveals the elements of good government, a civil government that is operating as God created it to function. Keep in mind, the Apostle Paul wrote this courageous admonishment during the cruel reign of Nero, a great persecutor of God’s people. God’s Word states:

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, reveals the first mark of good government, which is, Almighty God is the supreme authority and civil government is a delegated authority. This implies the concept of limited government. It also introduces the concept of higher law. Almighty God is the final arbitrator mankind can appeal to when suffering under the weight of oppression by despotic governments.

Our own Declaration of Independence acknowledges this truth. Our Founding Fathers appealed “to the laws of nature and nature’s God.” This provided the justification to “dissolve the political bands” with England and become a separate and distinct nation amongst the nations of the earth. If there is no such being as the Triune God of the Bible or the concept of higher law, America remains a rogue nation in rebellion to England to this day.

Good government also acknowledges God as the ultimate sovereign. If not, man has only two failed options to embrace. The state is sovereign or the individual is sovereign. One leads to tyranny and the other to anarchy. This is part of the reason why our nation opted for “One Nation under God.” Only “One Nation under God” can secure the delicate tension between a just social order on the one hand, while allowing maximum individual freedom on the other hand. Only “One Nation under God” can maintain the essential balance between authority and liberty.

The second mark of good government upholds God’s commandments in the civil sphere. The symbol of God’s authority in the church are keys (Matthew 16:19). The symbol of God’s authority in the state is a sword (Romans 13:1-4). The church is a ministry of grace, while civil government is a ministry of justice. The church is to be concerned with the spiritual welfare of men, while civil government is to be concerned with the physical welfare of men. Whereas God’s church is to teach the commandments of God, civil government is to enforce God’s commandments as they relate to the civil realm. The church is called to expose evil, while civil government is to punish and deter evil that constitute crimes.

Though there is a true separation of church and state, surprisingly, it is not found in any of America’s historical documents. It is, however, discovered in the Bible. There is no separation, however, between God and his delegated authorities that He established for His glory and our benefit.

Only the ultimate Lawgiver, Creator God, can define for us the concepts of good and evil. If civil government rejects this revelation, the danger becomes, as stated prior, good becomes evil and evil, good. This moral confusion will lead civil government astray from their sacred trust and inevitably lead to tyranny. Isaiah 10:1, 2, “Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, Who write misfortune, which they have prescribed, To rob the needy of justice, And to take what is right from the poor of My people, That widows may be their prey, And that they may rob the fatherless.”

Bible commentators refer to this passage as the “woe of tyrants” text. Rulers descend to this deplorable condition when they refuse to acknowledged God’s law and their duty to uphold it in the civil realm. They abandon justice, so God abandons them.

Lastly, Romans 13 addresses good government as God ordained. We are duty bound to obey all lawful authority. This passage of Scripture on civil government, however, does not address our Christian duty when civil government becomes idolatrous, tyrannical, and becomes a lawbreaker itself. In those instances, when the laws of men conflict with the laws of God, we must obey God rather than man. This was clearly taught by the same Apostles who admonished the church to obey all lawful authorities.

Acts 4:19, 20 states, “But Peter and John answered and said to them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.'” Acts 5:29 is even more explicit, “But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.'”

In the first epistle of Peter, the Apostle taught that in the times of oppression and tyranny, Christians are to trust God and continue to do good. He admonished this, even though our good may be considered a crime and civil government may consider Christians enemies of the state. This is true Biblical submission, which leads to redemptive suffering. Though certainly not easy, this is our Christian duty when living under a tyrannical state. It is also God’s rebuke to a government that moves from being a “Minister of God” to an agent of oppression.

Due to the challenge of negotiating through the Covid-19 virus, we have restructured our OSA National event for this year. Instead of us all meeting together for a week in a specified city, our seminars and rallies each day and night will be conducted on-line through our OSA Facebook page.

We will have a registration page set up so you can sign up and use it to rally your family, churches, and neighbors to participate and receive the necessary training to further the Gospel of the Kingdom to abolish abortion now in Jesus’ name!

We will have four seminars during the afternoon, starting Monday, July 20th-Thursday, July 23rd. They will start at 2 pm and conclude around 3:30 pm. One seminar will be conducted by Senator Joseph Silk from Oklahoma to rally legislators to train them in their duty to abolish abortion as a Lesser Magistrate.

The second seminar will be pastors reaching pastors for the just cause of abolition. Pastor Bill Aschol from Oklahoma, along with other local Oklahoma pastors, will be presenting the basis for an official church resolution that adopts abolition as the only just and Biblical response to the holocaust savaging our nation.

The last two seminars in the afternoon will be centered on training the youth. Jason storms and I will be conducting those seminars. If you know of magistrates, pastors, and youth, It would be good to try and get them signed up for these crucial training opportunities.

Each evening, Starting Sunday, July 19th-Friday, 24th, we will have rallies. Again, this will be conducted on-line through our OSA Facebook page. We will have special speakers with specific messages to help equip the church to fight the battle to end the American holocaust. We should have the line up of speakers ready to post soon.

There will be street activities assigned each day with specific goals in mind. Keep in mind, this year, it will be implemented in and through your local communities. We are working on the assignments accompanied with the literature and packets that will help accomplish these ministry tasks.

For instance, on Sunday, July 19th, the assignment will be to go to good, Evangelical churches, if they are open. You will go to worship and set up a meeting with the pastor and/or elders to give them a packet of materials to show them a more excellent way the church can be used to Ignore Roe, Establish Justice, and Abolish Abortion Now. Keep in mind that if you have church, ministry, or home school coop emails, you can send the literature out to them that way as well.

Street activities will include going to the death camps during the week to minister the Gospel of the Kingdom. Other ministry opportunities will include setting up meetings with your local magistrates, truth tours, and drop card outreaches etc. Please let us know if you are interested in helping to organize these outreaches in your local communities. We will try to connect you with other folks who register to participate in your area.

There will be a call to fast and pray prior to the launching of this OSA national event for three days. It will start, Monday, July 13-Wednesday, July 15th, 2020. There will also be a 24 hour prayer effort beginning on Saturday, July 18th at 8 am all the way thorough to Sunday, July 19th, 8 am. It will consist of 12 teams covering 2 hour slots for the 24 hour period.

Lastly, like many, OSA, has taken a big hit financially in these uncertain times. We are going to need some financial support to pull this off. If you care to help underwrite some the expense for this godly endeavor, please donate at this link. God bless you for helping and participating in this next great adventure in serving our Lord in Jesus’ name!

This blog post falls under the category of a plausible theory and working hypothesis.

A couple of weeks ago as I was scratching my head at how the media and our government was handling the threat of the Covid-19 virus, a thought came to me.

I bounced it off my beautiful wife and Matriarch of the Thomas Nation, Kendra Thomas. I asked, “What if one of the main objectives of the mishandling of this virus is to reconstruct America and the world on how we conduct business and do life?”

Miss Kendra is a researcher and she came to me last night with some evidence that suggests this may be the case. She found this article that may be worth the read.

This is from an article reprinted in ZeroHedge

Here are some highlights of the article in case you did not want to read the entire deal. In essence, America must suspend or override our liberties to keep up with the technological competition with China as a national security issue. Welcome to the Brave New World.

The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act created the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI).

According to former Deputy Secretary of Defense and NSCAI vice-chair, Robert Work, the purpose of NACAI is to evaluate “how the U.S. national security apparatus should approach artificial intelligence, including a focus on how the government can work with industry to compete with China’s ‘civil-military fusion’ concept.”

Compete with “Civil-military fusion” or adopt “Civil-military fusion?” We are seeing something draconian measures come out of the Covid-19 crisis.

NSCAI member and CEO of the CIA’s In-Q-Tel, Chris Darby, said, “Data is the new oil. And China is just awash with data. And they don’t have the same restraints that we do around collecting it and using it, because of the privacy difference between our countries. This notion that they have the largest labeled data set in the world is going to be a huge strength for them.”

The Pentagon and the intelligence community recently created the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center to initiate Artificial intelligence within our country.

It’s interesting to note that the NSCAI chairman is Eric Schmidt, the former head of Alphabet – Google’s parent company.

According to the article in ZeroHedge, “The intelligence community, the Pentagon and Silicon Valley – all view China’s advancements in AI as a major national security threat.”

In its May 2019 document, Chinese Tech Landscape Overview, NSCAI advocated a restructuring of society and of economy. The restructuring would erode many First Amendment rights.

Do away with in-person store shopping and move towards exclusive e-commerce online shopping. “When buying online is literally the only way to get what you want, consumers go online.”

Do away with cash and credit/debit cards and move entirely to smartphone-based digital wallets.

Do away with individual ownership of cars and institute a centralized ride-sharing network or “fleet” of self-driving and electric cars.

Do away with privacy by adopting mass surveillance. “Streets carpeted with cameras is good infrastructure.” The report also claims China’s advantage in facial recognition is due to government-implemented mass surveillance.”

Do away with traditional healthcare. A civilian DNA database is a “logical next step” for America. Having enough doctors for in-person visits is unnecessary. HIPPA compliance and FDA are obstacles that communist China doesn’t have.

I pray this series on the “prayers of repentance” has been beneficial to you. It is imperative that we seek the Lord during these uncertain times. Our nation is clearly in trouble.

Americans are distressed, fearful, and anxious. Many voices, many directives, many opinions, and many solutions are being offered during this trying time. Most of them merely add to the confusion. It seems we are drawing from a delusional well as many Americans are desperate to get their lives and livelihood back up and running again.

Thankfully, there is another well available that we can draw from. Isaiah 12:3 points the way, “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Some may have trouble believing that our Lord and His Word provides solutions and guidance as we negotiate through the good, the bad, and the ugly of life, but He truly does.
Proverbs 19:21 assures us, “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.” Our Lord Jesus Christ is the anchor that holds as the world is tossed to and fro like a drunken sailor on a stormy sea. Yet, He remains the eye in the storm.

Today, we are going to be investigating another prayer of repentance. Surprisingly, it is not from God’s people, but from a wicked, pagan city called Nineveh located in Assyria. This great city was steeped in goddess worship. They worshipped the Queen of Heaven, Ishtar.

This demonic deity was a part of the fertility sex cult that flourished in antiquity and is still alive and well in America today. Abortion is the bloody sacrament offered by the goddess worshippers in our day. The abortion industry are filled with women who practice this gory witchcraft at their temples (death camps). Bumper stickers like “The goddess is alive, and magic is in the air” abound amongst the workers of iniquity.
Temple prostitution, orgies, and child sacrifice were the norm amongst the heathen nations like Assyria that were bound by this idolatry. Assyria also had a reputation of being a cruel, brutal people. Accounts from history are startling. This is just one of them:

“I destroyed, I demolished, I burned. I took their warriors prisoner and impaled them on stakes before their cities. I flayed the nobles, as many as had rebelled, and spread their skins out on the piles [of dead corpses]. Many of the captives I burned in a fire. Many I took alive; from some I cut off their hands, from others I cut off their noses, ears and fingers; I put out the eyes of many of the soldiers.” (Time Frame 1500-600 BC by Time-Life Books) Assyrian War Bulletin (1000 B.C.)

The first mention of this notorious city is discovered in the book of origins. Genesis 10:8-10 records, “Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore, it is said, like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh…”

One of the most famous references of this city in the Bible, besides our Lord’s mentioning, (Matthew 12:39-41) comes from the book of Jonah. It is this citing that is featured in today’s “prayers of repentance” series. The name Jonah means “dove.” If you recall, the Holy Spirit fell on the Lord like a dove during John’s baptism (Matthew 3:16). Interestingly, one of the main operations of the Third Person of the Godhead, is to “convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8). In Jonah’s day, much to his chagrin, Nineveh, experienced conviction. More on that later.

Jonah proves that God can use a crooked stick to draw a straight line. At every turn in the saga between God, Jonah, and Nineveh, the prophet was less than cooperative. He resisted God’s will for his life and the mission he was sent to fulfill.

God called Jonah to Nineveh to “cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me” (Jonah 1:2). If you want to know what is happening to America look no further than this Biblical explanation. Our sins and abominations have reached heaven. Like most ministers today, Jonah, wanted nothing to do with confronting this pagan city in their abominations. He fled on a ship to Tarshish instead. Well, you can run, but you cannot hide.

God created a storm that placed the entire ship in jeopardy. Jonah’s neglect of duty placed the ship and all its passengers in grave danger. How does this apply today? Whenever the church neglects the ministry of being salt and light to the nations, it inadvertently places them in grave danger.
There is nothing to arrest, impede nor overcome man’s predilection towards immorality and its severe consequences that will surely follow in its depraved wake. Yes, there is pleasure in sin for a season. It does come to an end, however, and it never ends well, lest we repent.

At this juncture, it would be judicious to remind the Body of Christ of some inconvenient truths. The laws we have, the state of our government, and the culture we live in are God’s report card on the effectiveness of the church fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). I will leave it to your judgment to determine our grade before God.

Specifically, during a time of a holocaust, as in our day, the silent consent of God’s people and their inaction, always strengthens the oppressors and always prolongs the suffering of victims. This is the hard lesson of history.

God would not allow Jonah to skirt his responsibility. He prepared a great fish to swallow him. This calmed the seas, rescued the sailors, and gave Jonah time to consider his ways. From the belly of this fish, Jonah offered his prayer of repentance. He cried out to the Lord because of his affliction. There are two parts of the prayer that I want to emphasize. Both are critical to our nation’s future.

Jonah declared, “Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD” (Jonah 2:8, 9). God received what He was looking for and the fish spit out Jonah on dry land. Once again, the word of the Lord came to Jonah and this time he obeyed. He pronounced, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown” (Jonah 3:4)!

Does America deserve being overthrown any time soon? Well, are will still going to cling to worthless idols and forsake mercy? Are we going to continue in our national abominations that are bringing national calamity upon us? Are we in religious and nationalistic pride going to continue to deny salvation is of the Lord?
Our wealth, government, military might, and intelligence agencies cannot ultimately save us. God’s Word is clear on this matter, “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (Psalms 127:1). No, salvation is found in the Lord and Him alone. All else are worthless idols who fascinate and then assassinate unsuspecting souls.

Whether we turn or not, Nineveh, the great city that was filled with idolatry, perversion, cruelty, and barbarism had the good sense to take heed to the Jonah’s warning. God’s Word records, “Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them” (Jonah 3:5). Here is the essence of the king’s prayer of repentance:

Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish (Jonah 3:7-9)?

Many people desire for God to bless America, while we languish in bloody perversions. The one and only blessing from God that America desperately needs today is found in the book of Acts. God’s Word states, “To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities” (Acts 3:26).

The Lord took note of Nineveh’s humility and their godly response. He saw them turn from their evil way and He had mercy upon them. He did not destroy them. You can read about Jonah’s objections to God’s mercy upon this cruel, perverted and idolatrous people in Jonah 4, but for our purposes now, I want to end emphasizing the character of the true and living God.

Jonah threw a temper tantrum when God pardoned Nineveh. He stated, “Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore, I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!” (Jonah 4:2, 3).

There is no doubt God is angry with our nation. We have betrayed him. We have committed high treason against the majesty of heaven. We have gone a whoring after other gods. We have legalized pagan abominations, such as, child sacrifice and paraded our sin like Sodom. We have taken His many blessings and squandered them on our lusts. On and on it goes as our national sins tower over our heads seeking to crush us. Yet, many Americans still refuse to blush, humble ourselves and turn from our evil ways.
Nineveh serves as a hope of what can happen, if our nation meets God’s conditions. A godly response in these challenging times could spare us more of God’s just judgments coming upon us.

Psalms reveal, “For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalms 30:5).

Yes, the Lord can get angry and bring wrath upon men and nations, but it is tempered by the reality that His mercy endures forever. The Scriptures are clear on this. God’s anger is momentary, but His mercy lasts forever. Please keep this in mind as you intercede for yourselves, your family, the church, and our beleaguered nation.
